SHIFT network continues to grow as Home Group and BRE get on board

Posted by John Stapleton on 17/24/14 07:00

One of the largest housing associations in the UK has bolstered its commitment to sustainability by joining SHIFT – the leading benchmarking initiative to measure, monitor and improve environmental performance. The association, which has 240,000 homes across the north-east, becomes part of a network of organisations managing in excess of 1.3 million homes around the country.

Mark Henderson, Chief Executive of Home Group, said: “We are looking forward to working with SHIFT to further support our commitment to environmental performance, which will help us in our mission to ensure residents can stay warm and reduce their bills through the winter and around the year.”

Also joining SHIFT as a corporate partner is BRE, the Building Research Establishment. Based in Watford at the BRE Innovation Park, which showcases the latest prototype sustainable homes, BRE are a world leader in research, innovation and training and have worked for a more sustainable future for more than 80 years.

Dr Gavin Dunn, Director of BREEAM said: “BRE is pleased to be a corporate partner of the SHIFT network. The need for sharing best practise on sustainable, affordable, fuel efficient housing is more important than ever at a time when almost a million older people in the UK are in fuel poverty and homes remain the single biggest contributor to CO2. We look forward to working and learning with the network.”

Andrew Eagles, managing director of Baker Homes, welcomed Home Group and BRE.

We are delighted to have Home Group and BRE on board. SHIFT’s growth over the years is very encouraging and demonstrates the positive impact being realised by the sector. By joining SHIFT, Home Group have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability and we are excited to assist them in furthering their goals on operations, residents and the environment. And it’s great to be working with BRE as the development and roll out of their consumer standard for new homes is to be launched in the spring.”

SHIFT is the comprehensive environmental benchmark administrated by Baker Homes. In addition to BRE, corporate partners include The Chopping Company, Climate Energy, H+H, Inside Housing, LED Hut, Mears Group, Rockwool, Sustainable Communities Partnership, SolarTech, VRM Technology and Wienerberger.

BRE gave a presentation on their work at our Building to Low Carbon cost effectively conference. You can read more about BRE and the other goings-on of the conference here and here.
