Garden Project Case Study 4817

Customer Comment:
"We spent a year searching for the right firm to build a summerhouse. Plenty of firms would sell us the building but would not take responsibility (let alone give a guarantee) for the foundations. Builders who could provide a concrete base were not able to provide or build the summerhouse to our specification. On warm recommendation we met with Martin Baker in May 2012 who gave us a free land survey and project managed the whole process - from clearing the land and trees, through to providing a brilliant design of foundation (concrete with angle iron and then tanalised wooden frame) and finally building a summerhouse to our exact specification.
Furthermore the summerhouse we designed with him is a mixture of the features we liked from several of his designs - you simply choose the size, style of wood, type of window, floor finish, position of walls, doors and windows, internal and external lighting, etc. It really is as easy as that and to have one person accountable for the whole project removes all stress and worry and all at a very reasonable price for such high quality.
We were so thrilled that we also asked him to build us a workshop, a small corner summerhouse, an integral lean-to garden shed, a large pergola area, decking on three levels with step lighting, a new garden fence and also completely replace all the garden paths and patios. He effectively designed and landscaped our whole garden, transforming what used to be a liability in terms of gardening into an inspiring place to work, rest and play.
To see his team concrete seven very large areas in three hours using concrete pumps and pipes had to be seen to be believed. The finished paving looks stunning. Also he put in electrics, internet and TV cables under the garden - again at a very reasonable price.
His reply to questions starting 'Can we ...' is always 'Yes, this is what we can do' and there are never any surprises on costs - everything is clear from the start with no hidden extras that seem to pop up with other builders.
Basically he makes things happen and you will be able to use spaces you didn't think possible. We had overgrown corners of our garden which we hadn't stepped on in 30 years which are now focal points beautifully landscaped.
The buildings are so well insulated and have such brilliantly efficient heaters that even in the coldest of frosts they get hotter and stay warmer than the main house!
Our original idea was to have a log cabin type of summer building but having seen the variety of all-year round garden rooms available at Bakers and the wide range of styles and uses together with superbly engineered foundations we are so pleased we changed our minds.
The builders at Bakers are without doubt the most pleasant, reliable, courteous and skilled that we have come across (and we've seen a few over the past 30+ years). It may seem an odd thing to say with regard to having builders in but we were genuinely sorry to see them finish and leave (June 2013).
In summary, not only has our garden been transformed but so has the way we live and work. To have a garden room will transform your house and extend it into the garden all year round".

2 Phase Complete Garden Project in New Malden, Surrey

This two phase project was started in September 2012.
Phase 1 included the Eagle garden room and a matching workshop.
As both buildings were within 2m of the boundary they measured less than 2.5m high so as to conform to the planning rules. And as the Eagle was 6.7 x 3.6m, and within 1m of the boundary,it was fitted with a fire retardant wall to the rear. Both buildings were installed on a steel and timber frame base and were lined, insulated and double glazed for all year-round use.
The workshop was partitioned off into two sections - one for dry storage and the other to be used as a genuine workshop. Both buildings had decking to the front.
At this stage we also installed the electrics for both buildings and included two lamp posts and other lighting - all controllable from the house, heating & power sockets.
On completion of this work we then looked at the full landscaping and long-term requirements for the rest of the garden and phase 2 was quoted and agreed.
Phase 2 included two further buildings comprising a storage shed and feature summer house, and also included decking, patio and an arbour to complete the entire garden.
The feature summer house wanted to be subtle and set into the corner of the decking so a corner building was decided on, and kept all of the features of the previous Eagle and workshop so that everything tied in.This also followed through to the design of the shed that attached to the side of the Eagle.
All of the patio areas had a concrete sub base that was pumped to site due to the distance , A concrete sub-base gives longevity to patio and the decking was installed on our steel and timber frame option. The decking area was slightly set forwards from the boundary so as to give a flowerbed behind to grow climbers on to the trellis.
Electrics were installed to both the new buildings and decking lights were linked in to the remote switch in the house. This means the entire garden can be lit by one switch if required.
Every part of the garden except the grass and flower beds was managed and landscaped by the Bakers team.
