Merlin Summerhouse featuring a round gable window Case Study 5485 in Surrey

"It looks better than we could ever have imagined!"
Read how we surpassed this client's expectations with a stunning garden room for their home gym.

The Project – a UPVC contemporary apex garden gym room

On this project, our clients were happily settled in their home but needed extra space for their growing family. In particular, they wanted to add a home gym, so decided to build a new garden room for one.

The clients had a few requirements for their new garden room: they needed extra head height so they woudn't have to compromise on their choice of gym equipment, and they also needed their room to be multi-functional, so decided to incorporate a seating/relaxing area.

They found us after searching the internet and visited our show centre in Bolney, Mid Sussex to see the various options and finishes available.

Following a site visit to their home, Martin Baker discussed the various options and provided them with an Initial quotation. Our clients subsequently re-visited the Bakers Show Centre to see the finishes and options, enabling us to finalise costs and complete the design before proceeding with the project.

The work - designing the garden gym room

Our clients liked the look of the 'Merlin' design. They wanted to maximise the space at the end of their garden and were looking for a building that fulfilled all their requirements.

They chose an apex roof to maximise the head height, for which they required planning permission. They felt that they may as well obtain the largest possible size, and so decided on a spacious 6.5m x 4.6m room. The customer's house had some lovely round windows, and when Martin visited and saw these he suggested that they mirror this design feature into the garden room gable, instead of the usual triangular gable shape glass.

Our clients decided to upgrade from our SBS felt to our Firestone EPDM roof, which also offered them the lowest maintenance option possible.

They chose to colour match the UPVC doors to the exterior Medite Tricoya Extreme (MTX) cladding, trims and fascias and selected the very popular "Jungle Green" colour. The UPVC windows were also finished in matching "Jungle Green" UPVC, along with our Fire wall to rear. With no timber on the outside this project comes with a 10 year full guarantee, a 30-50 year life expectancy and the lowest maintenance possible.

The result - "It looks better than we could ever have imagined"

Our customers were delighted with their room, and left such a nice review that we thought their words best describe how they feel about their room:

"When buying our forever home there was only one thing we felt was missing and that was a room with a multi-purpose use that would provide us with a good amount of space to relax and entertain with our family and friends. A big enough space to incorporate a gym and a space our children can enjoy and benefit from all the way through to their teen years.

With both of us working busy shifts it's not easy for us to stay fit and arrange childcare so we thought a great solution would be to combine the space to be able to workout in the gym whilst watching our small children play in our summer house, or be able to see our children playing in the garden.

We extensively researched summer houses online and stumbled across Bakers Timbers. We were drawn to this company and loved the different designs it offered. It was great seeing the projects on the website unfold from construction to completion.

We liked the fact that there was the flexibility to choose what colour we wanted and decide on the inside specification. It was great that the build could also be designed around our financial budget and that we were given the option to add or take out any additions and gear our build to the spec we wanted.

We met with Martin where we were able to discuss our ideas and expectations. We decided after seeing the Merlin summerhouse at the show room this was the right design for us. It wasn't too modern looking and we felt this build would complement and be an extension of our existing home.

It took us a few months to decide what we wanted in regards to the specs and quotes we had been given. What we really appreciated was during this time we weren't hassled or pressured in to going ahead with anything. We knew and felt this company wasn't just after our money but had such a passion for their work and would only work with us when we felt ready.

A site visit was completed shortly after we had made the decision to go ahead with the summer house. The designs of the standard Merlin was tweaked. Martin came up with a great idea to change the triangular gable glass at the front of the Merlin and make this round to reflect and complement the round glass we already had in our existing home.

We also liked the idea of having a wider opening with doors to our summer house to create a feel of bringing the outside in. Martin was very accommodating and really listened and understood what we were hoping to achieve and made it possible.

The summer build only took three weeks to build on site. The construction did not hinder us at all or disrupt family life. The construction workers were very professional at all times. The whole project ran very smoothly and efficiently.

We are so pleased with end result of our summer house. It looks better than we could  ever have imagined. We have had so many compliments from family and friends who were so surprised how this timber made building could look so strong and impressive. It really does add a great extension to our home providing us with that additional living space and it meets all of our needs. This is a build that will withstand the test of time and allow our family to enjoy it for the foreseeable future.

What we have found really impressive is the amount of heat it sustains. We also have a Railway line ten metres or so behind this summer house and we cannot hear the trains passing. The noise insulation is superb.

We couldn't recommend Bakers Timber enough."
